MGM Grand Las Vegas Hotel & Casino Review

MG Grand, Las Vegas
It’s hard to miss the bright green lights or the massive lion out front of the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. One of the Strip’s most well-known and highest-trafficked casinos and hotels, the MGM has a little something for everyone. Whether you’re looking for great food, gambling excitement, killer shows, or a little rest and relaxation, you’ll be pleased with what the property has to offer.

Built in the early ‘90s, the casino is quite young by Vegas standards and has undergone several remodels and upgrades throughout the years. If you’re planning a trip to Sin City or you’re just curious what this beast of a casino has to offer, you’re in luck. In this guide, we’re going to take you on a comprehensive ride through the MGM Grand Las Vegas from top to bottom. Not only will we give you information about what the company has to offer, but we will also give you tips, tricks, and insider knowledge on how to have the best trip possible without spending an arm and a leg (unless you want to, of course).

Location on The Strip:

On the east side of Las Vegas Blvd., MGM Grand is located to the north of the Tropicana and south of Planet Hollywood. Across the street, you’ll find the New York New York and the Excalibur. Most of these properties are easily accessible from the MGM thanks to pedestrian bridges across the major roads.

Pro Tips for Getting More, Saving Money, and Maximizing Fun

  • The MGM Grand Las Vegas is at an incredible central location on the Strip. Thanks to the pedestrian bridges, you can get to many other properties quickly and without having to wait for traffic or run circles around the Strip.
  • The sportsbooks at MGM has three Skyboxes for rent. If you talk to the right person, you can usually get one of these luxury boxes for no rental fee, just a food and beverage minimum.
  • Popular slot machines at the MGM Grand Las Vegas can get busy during peak times. If you have a favorite slot that’s popular, get to your slot seat as early as possible if you’re looking to play at night.
  • Bonanno’s New York Pizzeria is a perfect option for a late-night snack after a night out, as the pizza joint is open until 5:00 AM on Thursdays through Sundays. Additionally, they have cheap draft beer for sale if you’re looking for an affordable cold one.
  • Wolfgang Puck is open until 6:00 AM most days if you’re looking for a late-night meal or snack. Additionally, the open floor plan creates for some of the greatest people-watching on the planet.
  • Make sure if you’re planning on attending an event at MGM Grand Garden Arena that you purchase your tickets directly from the box office or through a trusted third-party. Scalpers with counterfeit tickets have been known to target this venue (as is the case with any major venue in the world).
  • If you’re planning on seeing the Hunger Games exhibit, wait to purchase tickets until you arrive. Often, you’ll find employees out front offering discount coupons to attract in patrons. You won’t run a risk of being shut out due to the event being over capacity unless there’s a random Hunger Games convention in town that has yet to happen.

Gambling at MGM Grand Las Vegas

MGM Grand Las Vegas is an incredible spot for those looking to gamble. The property has a massive casino floor filled with table games, slots, a poker room, and a race and sportsbook. Action is available 24/7 in multiple rule variations, and stakes range from low to high limits.

Betting limits will vary significantly based on how busy the hotel is, the time of year, the day of the week, and the time. During slower times, you can expect to find table minimums around $5 to $10. On the weekends, at night, and during busier weeks, you may see table limit minimums move up to around $15 to $25.

For those looking to play slots, the casino does get busy, especially on the weekends. If you’re looking for a more popular slot game, you may want to scout things out and get to your seat earlier. If not, you may have to camp out or jump to your second choice. This is certainly not always the case, but something to be aware of. Also, this is not something isolated to the MGM Grand; you’ll experience this at most properties on the Strip.

  • 36 65″ LCD TVs and 24 42″ Plasma TVs
  • Up to 53 separate live feeds available at the same time
  • Non-smoking
  • Three Skyboxes available that can accommodate up to 20 guests

The sportsbook at MGM Grand Las Vegas is a great place to grab a drink, place a bet, or just watch a game. There’s no requirement to purchase a drink or make a bet, so if you’re just looking for somewhere to chill and catch a game, this should make your list. Sports covered include the four major sports (football, basketball, baseball, and hockey) and tennis, horse racing, golf, MMA, soccer, boxing, and auto racing.

For those looking for an elevated experience. The MGM Grand Las Vegas offers Skyboxes for rent or reservation. If you’re a large bettor, there’s a chance you may be able to snag one of these for free. But for most of us, the best way to get into a Skybox is make a reservation and rent it out.

Depending on how you go about reserving, you may be able to skip a reservation fee and only have a food and beverage minimum. A food and beverage minimum means you don’t need to pay to rent the box, but you will need to spend a certain amount of money on food and drinks. Your box will come with a dedicated server, so you won’t have to worry about going to the bar for any of your food or drinks.

The MGM Grand Poker Room

The poker room at the MGM Grand is a smaller room that has moved locations around the casino multiple times throughout the last 25 years. Throughout the day, you’ll have four tournaments ranging from a $65 buy into a $100 buy-in. For cash games, you’ll most likely see a handful of $1/$2 no-limit games and maybe one or two $2/$5 games.

On the weekends, it’s one of few locations on the Strip where you might find a mixed game or some PLO action. For those looking for “soft” games at lower limits, this room should certainly be on your radar. The poker room is located close to Hakkasan Night Club, which means you can expect a lot of recreational traffic through the room.

Room Booking Tips for MGM Grand Las Vegas

  • Make sure if you’re booking a suite to see if it’s located in the main hotel complex or The Signature. You can access the MGM Grand from The Signature, but it is a bit of a walk.
  • Like most properties, not all rooms have a Strip view. If this is something that’s important to you, make sure to check for that when you book.
  • When checking in, you may have the ability to upgrade to a better room for a fee or as a courtesy. It doesn’t hurt to be friendly and ask when you check-in.
  • MGM Grand currently has a $37 resort fee. This fee is not included in whatever rate you paid when booking. Resort fees are mandatory and apply to every night of your stay. So, expect to pay $37 a night collected at checkout. This is fairly standard across all of Las Vegas, so it’s applicable at most other properties as well.

Eating at MGM Grand – Restaurants, Dining, and the Buffet

If our understanding of econom-nom-nomics is correct, we know that most guests visiting Las Vegas are not just looking for gambling, but they’re also looking for great food. Out of all the properties on the Strip, MGM Grand may have the most extensive and eclectic mix of food options. With over 20+ high-quality options to choose from, you could spend your whole vacation eating if you really wanted to. While we don’t recommend that, your taste buds would certainly disagree.

MGM Grand Buffet

MGM Grand Buffet
Las Vegas has always been famous for its buffets. While they’re no longer free (unless you get a casino comp), they’re still the centerpiece of the culinary options at most hotels and casinos. Open mid-week from 7:00 AM until 9:30 PM and on Fridays through Sundays from 7:00 AM until 10:00 PM, the buffet offers tons of different options for breakfast, brunch, or dinner. Favorite dishes include the corned beef hash, made to order omelets, sushi, steak, ribs, made to order pizza, and crab legs (on the weekends).

Ambra Italian Kitchen + Bar

Ambra Italian Kitchen + Bar
Taking its inspiration from Milan at dusk, Ambra has the feel of a luxury nightclub but delivers the food you’d expect at a fancy restaurant. Popular Italian dishes include the Lobster Spaghetti Fra Diavolo, a 45-day dry-aged tomahawk ribeye, Veal Chop Marsala, Bucatini Carbonara, or the chef’s tasting menu.

Avenue Café

Open only for breakfast and lunch menus, you’ll have plenty of great options, including the highlighted Red Velvet Pancakes, Chicken and Waffles, and the Cornflake-Crusted Fried Brioche. Located on the main casino floor of the MGM Grand, the restaurant operates Monday through Sunday from 6:00 AM to 2:00 PM under the direction of Chef John Holderbach.

Blizz Frozen Yogurt and Desserts

Blizz Frozen Yogurt and Desserts
Located in The District area of the MGM right by the Garden Arena, Blizz Frozen Yogurt and Desserts is a great spot to grab an ice-cold treat on a hot day. Blizz opens at 8:00 AM, 7 days a week, and stays open until 10:00 PM, except on Fridays and Saturdays when they’re open until midnight. This frozen yogurt and dessert shop allows you to create your own dessert treat and you pay by the weight. The restaurant also offers some delicious crepes for those looking for a treat more suited for breakfast.

Bonanno’s New York Pizzeria

Bonanno's New York Pizzeria
Great pizza does not have to take hours to make or cost you an arm and a leg. Bonanno’s New York Pizzeria has two locations at the MGM, including one by the lobby and one back closer to Hakkasan Nightclub. Bonanno’s is a great spot for food after a night out on the weekend as on Thursdays through Sundays, they are open until 5:00 AM. If you’re on a budget, this is a great option to save a few bucks and still get something good. Pro tip—they also have some cheap draft beer for sale.

Cabana Grill

Cabana ooh na na—alright, that’s not how the song goes, but we get excited when talking about this poolside dining option. Why? The food is good, the drinks are cold, and it’s all available at an affordable price. Make sure you give the fish tacos a try, the lobster nachos, or build your own pizza.

China Tang

China Tang
Authentic Cantonese food is created with fresh ingredients and the masterful hands of the chefs of the Lai Sun Group out of Hong Kong. An upscale (business casual) environment awaits you and your friends with some classic favorites and unique dishes. Our favorites include the Crispy Pork Belly, Sweet and Sour Pork, and the Live Maine Lobster.

Crush

Crush
Chef William DeMarco teamed up with Jenna and Michael Morton of the Morton restaurant family to create this American cuisine restaurant in the MGM Grand Las Vegas. Described as a “social, modern, and playful” dining experience, Crush is not only good, but it’s a fun social experience. Some of our favorite dishes include the Cheesesteak Dumplings, the 8 oz. Filet Mignon, or the Shrimp Risotto. Crush also has a unique beer, cider, and specialty cocktail list.

Emeril’s New Orleans Fish House

Emeril's New Orleans Fish House
As one of the most famous chefs in the world, Emeril Lagasse brings his creole favorites to the MGM Grand Las Vegas at Emeril’s New Orleans Fish House. While our complete list of favorites would be too long to list, our top favorites include the Wagyu and White Cheddar Cheeseburger, the Fish House “Loco Moco,” the Creole Buttermilk Fried Chicken, and the Shrimp and Andouille Pork Sausage Jambalaya.

Greek Sneek

Greek Sneek
Part of the same collaboration bringing you Crush, Greek Sneek is a casual Mediterranean grill filled with quality food options, unique Greek cocktails, and of course, some Ouzo. The restaurant is open seven days a week, but only for dinner from 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM. While the restaurant is casual, we do still recommend making a reservation to guarantee your party a table. Must-try options include the Charred Octopus, Gyros, Feta-Stuffed Half Chicken, and of course, the Ouzo.

Hakkasan Restaurant

Hakkasan Restaurant
One of the more expensive options on the list, Hakkasan Restaurant is an authentic Chinese (Cantonese) restaurant delivering a fine-dining experience. The pairing of the chic nightclub feel (as Hakkasan is also a nightclub), and the authentic and exotic dishes create an experience that most would agree is worth the price. You can order all courses individually or take advantage of one of the six available tasting menus. Pricing on the tasting menus range from $58 per person up to $188 per person. The $58 Taste of Hakkasan menu is only available from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM nightly. Additionally, there is a vegetarian tasting menu available for $78.

Hecho En Vegas Mexican Grill and Cantina

Hecho En Vegas Mexican Grill and Cantina
If you like good Mexican food and great tequila, you’re going to love Hecho En Vegas Mexican Grill and Cantina. With over 100 different tequilas to choose from, you can do tastings or most likely find your favorite. While we could recommend must-try options, it would be pointless. Literally everything here is delicious. So, order your normal go-to dish, and you won’t be disappointed.

The one dish we will point out that might surprise you is the Grande Taco Salad. It’s big, fresh, and muy bien! Keep in mind the restaurant is closed on Mondays and Sundays.

International Smoke

The newest restaurant to the MGM Grand Las Vegas lineup is International Smoke, a BBQ restaurant with locations currently in Aventura, Del Mar, Houston, and San Francisco. If you’re someone who likes your BBQ simple, this is not the place for you. International Smoke is what you might call classy BBQ. If you’ve never tried one of these locations out before, you should definitely include it on your must-try list on your next trip to Vegas or one of the aforementioned existing locations.

Joel Robuchon

Easily the most expensive restaurant in Las Vegas, Joel Robuchon is a Three-Michelin Star, AAA Five-Diamond award-winning restaurant delivering exquisite French Cuisine. Now, we’re going to level with you here. If you’re not someone who likes incredibly fancy food, you’re not going to like this place. If you’ve ever eaten anywhere and thought anything you got was too fancy for your tastes, you’re not going to like this place.

That all being said, if you don’t fall into those two categories, this is a once in a lifetime dining experience. You won’t have to worry about ordering as every night is a special tasting menu from the chef himself. Tasting menu pricing is a little over $400 per person and does not include drinks. If you’re planning on eating here, plan to drop some cash and enjoy yourself.

L’Atelier de Joel Robuchon

L'Atelier de Joel Robuchon
If you want to experience the culinary masterpieces of Joel Robuchon, but you’re not feeling the full formal experience, you’re not out of luck. L’Atelier de Joel Robuchon is a business casual environment offering many of the same dishes you can get at the “full experience” restaurant. All food is created in front of you, which does make your time dining there more of an experience.

Morimoto Las Vegas

Is this the same Morimoto that’s the Iron Chef from TV? Yes! Contemporary Japanese cuisine is created here by the famed celebrity chef. Open only for dinner, the restaurant offers sushi, a la carte dishes, or a teppanyaki tasting menu. You should expect to pay a pretty penny here, but the food is great. A few favorites to try include the Organic Chicken Breast with Chorizo Ratatouille, Whole Lobster Masala, and any of the sushi.

Pieology

Pieology
Pieology can be described as the “Chipotle of pizza.” In other words, you’ll walk down the production line and choose everything you want, including the type of dough, sauce, and all the toppings for your personal pizza. Once you’re done, the pizza is tossed into a brick oven and cooked to perfection while you wait. If you’ve never enjoyed a pizza place like this before, consider making your first time in Las Vegas at Pieology.

Sports Deli

Sports Deli
Don’t let the fact that this deli is situated in the sportsbook lead you to believe it’s only for sports bettors. The deli serves delicious New York-style offerings like Bagel and Lox, Nathan’s Famous Hotdogs, soups, and salads. Counter service is available seven days a week and is open late until 3:00 AM on Friday and Saturday nights.

Tom Colicchio’s Craftsteak

A Las Vegas casino would not be complete without a flashy steakhouse. MGM Grand Las Vegas agrees and has brought in Chef Tom Colicchio to offer his spin on the classic steakhouse. Open for dinner seven days a week after 5:00 PM, Tom Colicchio’s Craftsteak has many quality choices we recommend including the 24-Hour Beef Short Rib, Prosciutto San Daniele, and literally any of the steaks.

Wolfgang Puck Bar and Grill

Wolfgang Puck Bar and Grill
MGM Grand Las Vegas has brought in celebrity chef Wolfgang Puck to deliver what feels like an upscale café with casual service. One of the big perks of this location is the hours. On Monday and Tuesday, the restaurant is open until midnight, but every other day of the week, it’s open until 6:00 AM and reopens at 11:00 AM or 11:30 AM. The restaurant also has a very open floor plan, making it a great spot for people watching especially into the wee hours of the morning.

Food Court and Subway

Don’t have a lot of time in your schedule to eat or wanting to keep on a budget? The food court and the Subway inside of MGM Grand Las Vegas are perfect options. Most options in the food court are open until between 11:00 PM and 1:00 AM except for Johnny Rockets, which is open 24 hours a day and Bonanno’s New York Pizzeria which is open until 5:00 AM (and reopens at 6:00 AM).

Drinking, Shows, and Partying – Nightclubs, Bars, and Entertainment

When you’ve had your gambling fix and eaten to your heart’s content, the fun doesn’t have to stop. MGM Grand Las Vegas has plenty of top-notch entertainment venues, exhibits, bars, and nightclubs for you and your party to enjoy.

MGM Grand Garden Arena

This 17,000-seat arena is one of the largest and most utilized in Las Vegas. What’s unique about this event center is that it’s not limited to one type of event. You’ll see MMA fights, boxing fights, concerts, sporting events, comedians, award ceremonies, and more. Most notably, the MGM Grand Garden Arena is home to some of the largest boxing fights on the planet. If you’re planning a trip in the future, we recommend checking out the full schedule of events to see if any of your favorites will be in town.

i
Do make sure you purchase any of your tickets directly through the box office or through a trusted ticket broker. Much like any major venue in the world, there are counterfeit tickets being sold on less reputable websites or right outside the venue.

David Copperfield

Correctly hailed as one of the “greatest illusionists of all time,” David Copperfield’s show at the MGM Grand is one of the best magic shows you’ll ever see. With two shows every night and a third matinee performance on Saturdays, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to see this iconic magician blow your mind. Kids under five years old are not allowed in the show, and guests under 18 will need to have an adult with them for the show. Ticket prices will vary, but they start around $70.

KA by Cirque du Soleil

KA by Cirque du Soleil
One of our favorite Cirque shows in Las Vegas is KA. With two shows nightly on Saturdays through Wednesdays, guests should plan accordingly if they want to see this show. If you’ve never seen a Cirque show before, this is a great first taste. The show has a martial-arts theme to it, which includes high-flying acrobatics, death-defying stunts, and some incredible fight choreography.

The Hunger Games: The Exhibition

This walkthrough, hands-on exhibit is a must-see for Hunger Games fans or District 12 residents. Open every day from 10:00 AM until 7:00 PM, you’ll be part of the rebellion as you walk through interactive exhibits, costumes, props, set recreations, and more. Tickets can be purchased right at the exhibit. We would recommend waiting to purchase until you get there as often there are people outside passing out discount coupons.

Brad Garrett’s Comedy Club

The funnyman most notably known for his role as Ray Romano’s brother in Everybody Loves Raymond, Brad Garrett, has taken his comedic talents to the management side of the house and opened his very own comedy club in Las Vegas. Brad Garrett’s Comedy Club brings in hilarious headliners every night of the week at 8:00 PM. The club makes for a great evening out or a good spot to get some drinks and start your night.

Top Golf

Topgolf Las Vegas
While Top Golf is not located at the MGM, it’s close enough and works in close enough partnership with MGM to be included here. Top Golf is a multi-floor driving range on steroids. You can rent out a bay to hit balls at targets and play games, or you can enjoy the bars, see shows, listen to concerts, and even jump in the pool. Yes, this Top Golf has a pool! The property is within walking distance, but might be better to utilize Uber or Lyft (or a taxi if you’re old school).

Hakkasan Nightclub

Wait for the beat to drop… If you’re looking to dance, drink, and party the night away at one of the world’s top clubs, you’ll be interested in learning more about Hakkasan. The club is open Thursday through Sunday, offering five different floors of excitement. Making the list of America’s Best New Clubs in Rolling Stone and ranked the #1 nightclub in the world by Playboy Magazine, Hakkasan is the top of the line when it comes to nightclubs.

You’ll find nothing short of the best DJs in the world, including Calvin Harris, Tiesto, Steve Aoki, and Zedd. Now, as you might expect, the club will be busy and expensive. If you’re planning a trip and want to go to Hakkasan, get tickets or make arrangements as early as possible. If you have the coin to drop, you might look into renting a table and getting bottle service. If not, that’s okay. Get tickets and plan on getting there early, especially if your group has a lower female to male ratio. Sorry guys, it’s Vegas, and they cater to the ladies.

LEVEL UP

Calling all tech-savvy adults! Your adult playground is now awaiting your arrival. LEVEL UP at MGM Grand is a pay-to-play entertainment zone with virtual reality games, pool, arcade games, karaoke, live DJs, skill games, sports, and more. Did we mention they also have a great selection of beers and drinks to choose from? If you’re looking for a fun night out that’s not a show or a nightclub, you’ll definitely want to consider LEVEL UP.

Whiskey Down

Whiskey Down is not just the best whiskey bar inside the MGM, but it’s one of the best whiskey bars in the whole city. The bar is open 24 hours a day and serves as an upscale version of the lobby bar. Not only can you find signature cocktails and a phenomenal selection of whiskey, but you can also play live blackjack at a table inside the bar or enjoy video poker while you’re saddled up to one of the bar seats.

Losers Bar

While nobody likes to celebrate losing, the Losers Bar takes a positive spin on a negative theme. This country-themed bar is located directly off the casino floor. It’s a great spot to grab a quick drink or enjoy some live music and a night out. The bar is casual and is open until 4:00 AM every night of the week.

Centrifuge

The circular bar Centrifuge has a solid list of adult beverages served within a unique and colorful environment. Additionally, the bar continuously spins for an over-the-top unique experience. The casual bar is open seven days a week from 4:00 PM until 4:00 AM.

Lobby Bar

Need a drink the second you get inside the MGM? Don’t worry, the Lobby Bar has you covered. Open 24 hours a day, the bar can be accessed the second you step onto the casino floor. You’ll have a full array of beer, wine, liquor, and signature cocktails to choose from.
